History of Kutztown

Kutztown is a delightful neighborhood in Berks County, Pennsylvania, spanning 1.6 square miles hosting an approximate population of 5,080 with a population density of 3,175.00 per square mile. The neighborhood originally belonged to Peter Wentz, belonging to what is considered modern-day Maxatawny Township. Wentz sold a large portion of his land to George Kutz in 1775, which later became the community of Kutztown.

In its early days, Kutztown was settled by German immigrants and was largely farmland when the area was incorporated on April 7, 1815. When the town was incorporated, it became the second-largest borough in Bucks County. Spanning across East Penn Valley, the neighborhood is the site of several historic landmarks, including the Kutztown School building and the H.K. Deisher Knitting Mill.

The Kutztown School building was constructed in 1892, featuring a stunning bell tower. The building was designed in the Late Victorian architectural style and remained a public schoolhouse until 1977. The school building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. A few years before the construction of the Kutztown School building, the H.K. Deisher Knitting Mill was built in 1881. The mill's construction resulted from the industrial period and functioned as a knitting mill until 1956. The mill was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 and is currently utilized as a warehouse.

Kutztown Historical Society

The longstanding neighborhood holds a rich history preserved by the Kutztown Area Historical Society. The society was initiated between 1974-1975 and became the first regional historical society in Bucks County in 1976. Historical society members work to preserve the town's historical artifacts and buildings to remember the neighborhood's long journey. The Kutztown Historical Society runs a museum located in the former 1892 Kutztown School building. Within the museum, you will find artifacts dating back to the early 1800s, including needlepoint work from former Kutztown School students.
