Malvern is a borough in Chester County, Pennsylvania. The neighborhood is 25 miles west of Philadelphia and spans 1.27 square miles. The Malvern ZIP code, 19355, covers Malvern and parts of East Whiteland, Charlestown, Willistown, East Goshen, East Pikeland, and Tredyffrin Townships.

History

In the 17th century, Malvern was settled by Welsh immigrants who bought land from William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania.

The borough of Malvern was the site of the Paoli Massacre, a battle in the Philadelphia campaign of the American Revolutionary War, which occurred on September 2oth, 1777, under the command of General Anthony Wayne.

In 1885, the East Whiteland Baptist Church moved to its church and cemetery property, bounded by Channing, South Warren, East First Avenues, and Roberts Lane. The church changed its name to the Willistown Baptist Church and became the First Baptist Church of Malvern in 1900.

The heart of Malvern has always been the church, trains, and businesses located at the junction of the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad and West Chester Railroad. The community changed its name to Malvern when Philadelphia and Columbia's successor, the Pennsylvania Railroad, straightened its tracks through the village.

By March 1880, the village's status as a railroad junction ended when the West Chester Railroad's northern terminal was moved to Frazer, Pennsylvania.

An interesting fact about Malvern, which truly demonstrates the historical ties within the borough, is that it was the location of the first Annual Memorial Day Parade in 1869.

Today, Malvern hosts a mix of residential styles, retail and industrial businesses, dedicated open land, and several civic, cultural, and religious institutions.
