History

The town of Fairless Hills began in 1951 when developer Danherst Corporation began erecting prefabricated homes built by Gunnison Magichomes, Inc.

The Gunnison company was a wholly-owned subsidiary of U.S. Steel Corporation, more commonly known as U.S. Steel, an American integrated steel producer headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The development was financed by U.S. Steel with a loan of $50 million and was named in honor of Benjamin Fairless, the president of U.S. Steel.

At the time, U.S. Steel operated the Fairless Works Plant, which employed many Fairless Hills homeowners.

The Sotcher Farmhouse

The original farmhouse was built around 1712 and was a one-story, stone structure. Later on, substantial additions were made in 1760 and 1806.

During the 1760 addition, constructors built a two-story, three-bay fieldstone structure, and during the 1806 addition, constructors completely enveloped the 1712 house.

Today, the farmhouse is a 2 1/2-story, four-bay fieldstone structure incorporating the house's distinctive three arches.

The Sotcher Farmhouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
