History

Ogontz was originally inhabited by the Sandusky Indians who occupied the land for thousands of years until the area was discovered by Jay Cooke, an American financier who established a mansion in the neighborhood.

The community was named after the Native American tribe chief and greatly developed throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

One of the town's first major developments was the Ogontz Theatre, which took two years to construct from 1926 to 1927. The theater was a beloved location for residents and featured several performers from the area. The building was designed by Hoffman-Henon Co., consisting of 1,777 seats. The theater was a great success until it was demolished in 1988.
