History

Poplar, PA, was originally inhabited by the Lenape Indians, the indigenous people of Northern Woodlands. Today, Poplar is an urban area and is popularized for its residential features, luxury apartments, and variety of restaurants.

Before Poplar was the area we know it as today, it consisted of mainly single-family row homes. During the Great Depression (1929-1933), the area was drastically impacted, leaving it nearly run-down in the late 1930s.

To revive the area, Richard Allen Homes, a public housing project, replaced the former town and provided work that attracted citizens to the area for wartime production.

For several decades Richard Allen Homes was the only aspect the area had to offer. Unfortunately, due to deterioration in the homes and a lack of properly planned spaces, Poplar became an area for crime and became notorious for crime and drug trafficking in the 1970s and 1980s.

However, in the years following, Poplar was able to rebuild and Cambridge Plaza (1957), a modern public housing project. Soon Polar was comprised of two 248-unit, high-rise towers, and 124 low-rise townhouses.

Today, Poplar is home to approximately 17, 147 residents and consists of a number of notable historic locations.
