Belmont Hills is a residential neighborhood in Lower Merion Township, Pennsylvania. The neighborhood is located along the Schuylkill River and offers residents access to the Schuylkill Expressway. Belmont Hills belongs to zip code 19004.

History

Belmont Hills has long been known as a desirable area to live in for its mountainous landscape. The area was named Belmont in the 1950s, which means "Beautiful Mountains."

Prior to the 1950s, the area of Belmont Hills was referred to as Rocky Hills. Later on, once the reading railroad was extended to the town, the area was named West Manayuk.

Belmont Hills is a community with its own public school, fire department, library, and pool. The community's public school, Ashland Avenue School, was constructed in 1919 and served students from kindergarten to eighth grade. By 1939 the school only served students from kindergarten to sixth grade.

In 1952, following the town's renaming, the public school was renamed Belmont Hills School. The original building closed down in 1982, but by 1999, the school reopened and is now referred to as Belmont Hills Elementary School.

Belmont Hills has its own fire department, but its origin story is unique. The fire department began as a civic group in 1917. The group would take it upon themselves to assist in house fires and used a horse-drawn wagon to move around town with ease.

In 1919, the civic group was officially recognized as the township fire company and was called the West Manayunk Fire Company. By 1926, the fire company had its own station, and following the town's renaming in the 1950s, the company was officially named the Belmont Hills Fire Company.
