History

Wallingford was founded in 1687 and named after Wallingford, England.

The first school in Wallingford opened in 1810 and was built on a portion of a 78-acre land grant of farmer and friend of William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania.

Wallingford belongs to the Nether Providence School District, which was formed in 1856. The district then merged with the Swarthmore School District to become the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District, retaining both the Nether Providence and Swarthmore High Schools.

By 1984, the middle and high schools merged to become Strath Haven Middle School and Strath Haven High School. Wallingford is also home to the Mother of Providence Regional Catholic School. The private school was formed due to a merger in 2012 between St. John Chrysostom in Wallingford and Nativity BVM School in Media.

Hinkson's Corners

  • Located at Providence Road and Brookhaven Road stands the oldest section of a home once owned by James Hinkson, a local wheelwright. The house standing on the corner was built in 1737. In the 1880s, the home became a resort. While a stone structure replaced the original frame dwelling, the house is still stunning and has been standing since 1799.

Pendle Hill

  • Located at 338 Plush Mill Rd, Wallingford, PA 19086, the Pendle Hill was founded in 1930 on a 23-acre land lot to be a Quaker study, retreat, and conference center. Today, Pendle Hill also serves as a publishing house and offers online &residential study programs, short-term courses and retreats, conference services, publications, and leadership training.

Community Arts Center

  • The Community Arts Center offers a 2,078 seat performing arts center near Wallingford. The center sits next to the Genetti Hotel, built in 1921 and was originally a movie palace.
