Allgates Estate

The Allgates is a large estate in Allgates. Consisting of 19 buildings, it was built for financier Horatio Gates Lloyd and his wife, Mary Helen Wingate Lloyd. The earliest establishment in the estate, the Frog Tavern, was built in 1731. Other notable buildings include the Federal School of 1797 and the Mansion House. Designed by Wilson Eyre, the Mansion House is the largest out of all of them and was completed in 1912. From 1911 to 1915, the Olmsted Brothers were in charge of landscaping the area. On May 15, 1979, the complex of buildings was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Since then, a number of new residences have been developed in the estate. Today, it includes a total area of 26.6 acres.

Federal School

Federal School is a one-room schoolhouse in the Allgates Estates of Allgates. Founded in 1797, it was named the Federal School because of the pride the community had for being part of the Federal United States. In 1849, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania acquired the building and renamed it the Haverford Seminary Number 1. It functioned as a public school until Horatio Gates Lloyd purchased it in 1940. After the Llyod family moved out, it was used as a storage building. In 1991, the Historical Society of Haverford Township restored it. Today, the building features 1849 school reenactments for 4th graders in the School District of Haverford Township. On November 5, 1971, the historic schoolhouse was added to the NRHP.
