Home to the Garden City neighborhood is the Taylor Memorial Arboretum, a 30-acre arboretum, and garden located at 10 Ridley Drive. The beautiful arboretum is open daily and is administered by Widener University, a private university in Chester, Pennsylvania.
The university acquired the arboretum to provide free, public educational opportunities for students and community members. The university stated it intended to use the reserve for research, including citizen science projects.
The Taylor Memorial Arboretum was established in 1931 by Joshua. C. Taylor, a lawyer and conservation proponent, in memory of his late wife, Anne Rulon Gray. The site was largely part of a previous industrial mill complex.
The majority of specimens at the arboretum were planted in the 1950s when the ground opened for public visitation. Today, the site includes a grotto (former quarry), millrace, and pond with bald cypress. The arboretum also hosts a collection including three Pennsylvania State Champion Trees (a giant dogwood, a needle juniper, and a lacebark elm), azaleas, dogwoods, magnolias, junipers, lilacs, viburnums, witch-hazels, Japanese maples, boxwoods, and arborvitae. The reserve also contains cattails, ferns, irises, mosses, rushes, and wildflowers.
The most recent update to the arboretum was the removal of a dam in 2005. The dam was removed to make the environment flow smoothly and ensure safety for those swimming in the creek. Today, the remains of the dam, such as large rocks and the steel that held it together, can be found at the creek bank.
