Neighborhood History

Prior to 2010, when Lionville was named a census-designated place, the area was known as Lionville-Marchwood. However, the name 'Marchwood' only referred to a housing development that began in the early 1960s located couth of the 100-113 highway intersection.

Before the name Lionville-Marchwood, the original name of the village was Welsh Pool. To honor the local Red Lion Inn, the name was changed to Lionville since a borough of Red Lion, Pennsylvania, already existed.

The area of Lionville along Village Avenue is a protected historic district. Within the historic district stands The Friends Meeting House, a historic Quaker meeting house located on North Village Avenue. The home was used as a hospital by the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.

An interesting fact about the area is that while Lionville has an independent ZIP code and post office, the neighborhood has never had mail delivery. Instead, the residents of Lionville always have and continue to pick up their mail at either a general store or a fire station location.
