Swarthmore is a borough located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, with an estimated population size of 6,000 from the United States census. Before the establishment of Swarthmore College, the borough was originally named “Westdale” after the prominent artist Benjamin West, one of the first residents in the borough.

Swarthmore is home to Swarthmore College, which was founded in 1864 and was initially a part of Springfield Township. The introduction of passenger train service from Philadelphia in the 1880s increased the borough's appeal as a commuting suburb, which led to the borough's incorporation in 1893.

The Swarthmore College campus takes up about a third of the borough's land area. Several of the roads in the southern half of town are named after eastern schools and most of the existing homes in the borough date back to the Victorian era to the 1920s.

Education System

The borough is a part of the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District that was formed from a merger between the Nether Providence School District and Swarthmore-Rutledge School District in 1983. The District comprises 3 schools, Swarthmore-Rutledge Elementary School, Strath Haven Middle School, and Strath Haven High School.

Prominent Figures

Swarthmore was and is known for a variety of notable figures in society that lived in the borough. A few we can mention are as follows:
