West Park is a residential and commercial neighborhood located in Stowe Township, Pennsylvania. The community is also partially in the borough of McKees Rocks. In the heart of West Park lies the main business district of Stowe Township, Broadway. West Park appears on the Pittsburgh West Geological Map and is considered an urban neighborhood based on population density.

The West Park Community

West Park is a unique community in Pennsylvania, with its local charm and easy access to the well-maintained public West Park, the area is great for raising a family.

The area is known for its friendly and hardworking residents. An interesting fact about West Park is that 18.1% of the neighborhood's households are run by single mothers, which is a higher concentration than in 96.0% of American neighborhoods.

In the West Park community, 37.9% of the working population is employed in manufacturing and laborer occupations. The second highest occupational group is sales and service jobs. This percentage of resident occupations spans from major sales accounts to working in fast-food restaurants. A significant number of residents, 21.1%, are employed in clerical, assistant, and tech support occupations and 18.4% are employed in executive, management, and professional occupations.

The West Park resident most commonly speak English in 99.2% of households. However, 8.0% of residents also speak Polish as a second language.

The presence of bilingual residents could very well be due to the diversity within the area.

In the West Park neighborhood, residents most commonly identify their ethnicity or ancestry as Italian (20.4%). There are also a significant amount of people with Irish ancestry (18.6%), and residents who report German roots (15.6%), along with some of the residents are also of Polish ancestry (10.1%). There is also a presence of  Sub-Saharan African ancestry residents (3.8%), among others.


Right in the heart of the West Park neighborhood stands the William Allen High School. Located at 106 North 17th Street, Allentown, the school serves 2,536 students in grades 9-12. The school was established in 1858 and belongs to the Allentown School District.

William Allen High School was established when Mr. R. W. McAlpine took a group of 14-year-old students to the Garber-Horne Building, formerly the home of the North American Homeopathic School of Healing Arts at South Penn Street. In 1859, by a 6-2 vote, a separate high school was established to separate the boys and girls.

From 1859-1894 secondary school classes were held separately for boys and girls with the boys in the Leh's store building on Hamilton Street, and the girl's in the Sunday School rooms of the First Presbyterian Church. In 1917, the current building where the school is held opened and the schools were consolidated into one building.

Starting with the first graduation class of three, the William Allen High School is now the largest high school in the city of Allentown, the largest high school in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania, and the third-largest high school in the state of Pennsylvania. With a student-to-teacher ratio of 18:1 students have the ability to meet peers outside of their neighborhoods and diversify their interactions.

The High School is a neighborhood staple and has served the community of West Park for over 150 years. Today, the school is ranked:
