Whitehorse Farms is a populated place located within Willistown, a minor civil division (MCD) of Chester County. Whitehorse Farms appears on the Valley Forge U.S. Geological Survey Map and is well known for its proximity to the White Horse Farm.

History of White Horse Farm

White Horse Farm, also known as the Elijah F. Pennypacker House, is a historic home and farm spanning 0.8 acres. The original home was built in 1770 and was the home of abolitionist Elijah F. Pennypacker.

Elijah F. Pennypacker (1804-1888) was a prominent member of the community in his time. The abolitionist served in the Pennsylvania State Legislature as a colleague of Thaddeus Stevens from 1831 until 1836, when he left to focus on the antislavery cause.

Pennypacker then became president of the Chester County and Pennsylvania abolitionist societies.

By 1840, his home became a station on the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses established in the United States during the early to mid-19th century used by enslaved African Americans to escape into free states and Canada.

John Greenleaf Whittier, a poet, and abolitionist, once said of Elijah Pennypacker, "In mind, body, and brave championship of the cause of freedom, he was one of the most remarkable men I ever knew."

Pennypacker's home still stands today. His home was originally a 2 1/2-story, stuccoed stone structure with a gable roof, and the oldest section of the home dates to around 1770.

Around 1810, a two-bay section was added to the home, and by 1840 a two-story, two-bay frame section was added as well. The house was remodeled and expanded in 1915, incorporating Georgian Revival design details.  The property also contains a barn and spring house.

The White House Farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Local Preserves

If you're looking to connect with nature, then Whitehorse Farms is a fantastic area for you. The community is located along the Kirkwood Preserve and the Rushton Woods Preserve.

The 83-acre Kirkwood Preserve is open to the public every day of the year and is owned and managed by the Willistown Conservation Trust. The Kirkwood Preserve is largely grassland, which is optimal for birds and other wildlife. Recognized by Audubon Pennsylvania Area (IBA)as an Important Bird Area (IBA), the open countryside of the Willistown Conservation Trust program area provides important habitat and resting areas for birds.

Within the preserve, you will also find excellent walking trails perfect for an active family.

The 86-acre Rushton Woods Preserve has been a local gem for years and is especially important to the Willistown Conservation Trust, the owner, and preservation manager.

Over the years, Rushton Woods has become one of the most critical sites for bird conservation within the Audubon designated Upper Ridley/Crum Important Bird Area (IBA) and home of public walking and riding trails with connections to a broader network of trails in the Willistown area.

Rushton Woods is also home to the Rushton Conservation Center. The center showcases the work of Willistown Conservation Trust and provides a space for visitors to explore regional and national issues in conservation.

Both preserves are within walking distance from the heart of Whitehorse Farms and are fantastic locations to bring the whole family.
