The personal injury attorneys in Bensalem, PA, are happy to present this article. We urge visitors and residents to learn more about the history of the community and what makes Bensalem a great place to live.

The History of Bensalem

Bensalem is a family-friendly township in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The community's history dates back to the late 1600s when Bensalem's boundaries were officially defined in 1692 at the Court of Bucks County. Surrounded by the Deleware River, the Neshaminy Creek, and the Poquessing Creek, the town was originally known for its farmland and grand mansions built from 1700-1800. Bensalem was named after European settler Joseph Growden, who owned an estate named Manor of Bensalem. It is believed that the manor was named in honor of William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania. Growden was one of the first prominent members of the town and originally named Salem, a term for peace, and the syllable Ben was added in 1701.

Since the town's founding, the community has become a large residential and commercial area home to approximately 60,329 residents as of 2016. The neighborhood is within proximity to the following:

  • Penn Community Bank Amphitheater
  • Rosedale Memorial Park
  • Boat Playground

The township is also home to The Historical Society of Bensalem Township, located at 3211 Knights Rd, Bensalem, PA 19020. The non-profit society was founded in 1977 and originally formed to publish a written history of the town, eventually published in 1984. The society continued to work to preserve the town's history and published a second book in 2000, followed by a third book focusing on Bensalem's major historical events since 1692.

Bensalem Township Country Club

Home to Bensalem is the long-standing Bensalem Township County Club. The grounds that the club sits upon were originally an English Estate in 1741. Gus Hansel. Mr. Hansel later purchased the grounds and utilized the farmlands until the Bensalem Township began developing in the 1950s. Hansel recognized the town's shift from farmland to commercial and decided to pursue the possibility of opening a golf course.

The country club was founded in 1960 as a private course and was originally named “Cornwells Golf Club.” The golf course was designed by William Gourdon, an award-winning architect, during the latter half of the 20th century. Gourdon designed the stunning golf course around Hansel's former farmhouse, and it remains standing on the property to this day. Upon Hansel's passing in 1984, the club was purchased by Albert Bader and later became a public course in 1989.

Today, the country club is a prominent feature in Bensalem. It consists of an 18 hole golf course with 70 layouts, a stunning outdoor gazebo, and a banquet hall utilized for private events such as birthday parties, weddings, funerals, and various types of ceremonies. Bensalem residents are encouraged to contact the country club at 215-639-5556 to inquire about reserving the site for any private events.
