The personal injury attorneys in Torresdale, PA, sponsor this article to present a detailed excerpt about the area.

Torresdale, formerly known as Torrisdale, is a neighborhood in far Northeast Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Between the Deleware River Holmesburg and Bensalem Township, the neighborhood offers residents a comfortable living environment with great access to restaurants, parks, and coffee shops.

The area belongs to ZIP code 19114 and area codes 215, 267, and 445.

History

Torresdale's original name, Torrisdale, was titled by Charles Macalester Jr. after his family's ancestral Scotland home. Macalester originally owned the land and built his summer home in Torrisdale. The Glen Foerd Mansion now occupies that land.

At the time, Torrisdale belonged to the Deleware Township and partially to the Lower Dublin Township until the Consolidation Act in 1854.

The Act of Consolidation, approved by Governor William Bigler, conducted by the Pennsylvania General Assembly, created Philadelphia's consolidated City and County. The legislation expanded the city's territory to the entirety of Philadelphia County.

Following the consolidation, Torresdale continued to develop. By 1894, Torresdale became home to The Rowling Association of American Colleges.

This was monumental for the history of Torresdale because the association was the first collegiate athletic organization in the United States. When the organization was founded, the captains of the leading teams devised a primary rule of eligibility: that only undergraduate students should be eligible to represent their college in the regatta.

Despite several amendments and additions, this rule remains the foundation of the NCAA rules of eligibility.

Before the Philadelphia Main Line, Torresdale, Holmesburg, and Andalusia had been Philadelphia's posh suburban neighborhood.

The lavish reputation of Torresdale is most evident in the homes in the neighborhood, particularly the Glen Foerd Mansion. The luxurious and historic riverside mansion stands on a grand estate near the mouth of Poquessing Creek.

The epitome of Torresdale wealth is seen in Andalusia, also known as the Nicholas Biddle Estate. The estate hosts a historic mansion on the Deleware River. The estate has been so crucial to the neighborhood's status that the village within the neighborhood was named after the estate.
