The slip and fall lawyers in Nicetown-Tioga, PA, sponsor this article to present readers with a detailed excerpt about the neighborhood.

Nicetown-Tioga is a neighborhood in North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The area consists of two smaller towns, Nicetown and Tioga. While the neighborhood boundaries are not officially agreed upon, some of the potential boundaries include Wingohocking Street, Clarissa/Windrim Allegheny Avenue, and Old York Road. Nicetown-Tioga belongs to ZIP code 19140 and area codes 215, 267, and 445.

The land of Nicetown's history began as a small village in rural Philadelphia County. The area was named after Hans te Nues, a Mennonite immigrant who purchased the land in 1699. Nues and his brother, Jan, immigrated from Amsterdam in 1698 and split ways when Jan settled in nearby Germantown. Both brothers were Mennonite ministers.

The original home of the Neus family was a stunning home that, unfortunately, burned down in 1800.

The family has had very successful descendants, including John Nice of Germantown, a captain who leg the Battle of Germantown during the American Revolutionary War.

The name "Tioga" is a Mohawk and Iroquois word, which likely connects to the original Lenape Indian inhabitants of the area. The word refers to a place where a stream or river current forks or runs swiftly. The name Tioga was introduced in the mid-19th century and has been used since.

From 1700-1800, the Nicetown-Tioga community was predominately rural with some villages. The area consisted of various family farms and some country estates of gentleman farmers.

Between 1850-1900 Nicetown-Tioga experienced drastic change through industrial development. The industrial expansion drew in various ethnic groups, including Irish-Catholics from the famine in Ireland, Polish-Jewish refugees from eastern Europe, and an influx of African Americans escaping legal discrimination of the south in the 1960s. The neighborhood also saw an influx of Puerto Rican relocation.

Due to the increasingly diverse population throughout the industrial period, Nicetown-Tioga experienced the effects of white flight leading to the abandonment of several buildings and increased criminal activity.

In the early to mid-2000s, Nicetown-Tiogo experienced urban gentrification, and in 2008, the median home sale price stood at $42,000.

Today, the neighborhood offers residents and visitors an urban-suburban mix feel and is a predominately black neighborhood (75.5%) with a smaller percentage (24.5%)  of white residents.
