Caswallen is a neighborhood in the West Goshen Township of Pennsylvania. The small neighborhood belongs to ZIP code 19380 and is right alongside U.S. Route 322. Caswallen is also within walking distance from a variety of parks and schools. Access to the Caswallen neighborhood is from Pottstown Pike (Route 100) onto Caswallen Drive.
Just up the road from Caswallen stands the West Chester Golf & Country Club. The country club is a core part of the neighborhood, bringing families and friends together for special occasions and casual meetings.
The country club's beginnings start in September 1898, when 35 distinguished citizens of Wester Chester, PA, met at the home of Miss Margaret Walter. At Miss Walter's home, the citizens agreed to organize the West Chester Golf & Country Club. In 1899, the Club leased the Darlington farm, south of the Borough. The property had one tennis court, an original clubhouse located at 839 South Church Avenue, and a nine-hole course that was 2700 yards long.
In August 1906, Lowndes Taylor agreed to expand the country club and lease a 55-acre plot. The new site, which remains today’s current site, is north of Ashbridge Street, between High and New streets. The grand country club spans across parts in West Chester and West Goshen township.
In March 1907, the country club faced renovation, and workers began building a new clubhouse, links, and tennis courts. By December 1907, the club was ready for its formal opening of the Club and grounds. The property continued to develop in 1909, two bowling alleys were added, as well as more tennis courts and three new greens and sand “pits.”
The Club has been successful over the years but suffered a setback the morning of January 23, 1911, when an intense fire destroyed the Clubhouse.
Community members gathered together and decided the Clubhouse must be rebuilt, as it was such a pivotal focus of town social life. The new Clubhouse was built on the same site and opened on December 9, 1911.
The West Chester Golf & Country Club has seen many improvements to Clubhouse, tennis, and pool facilities throughout the years. While the Club has evolved over the years, it has remained a member-owned club that strives to provide the finest country club experience in the region.
The West Chester Golf and Country Club symbolizes the development of the neighborhood and the deep community amongst all past and present members who have worked together to build the Club into what it is today.
Aside from the amazing amenities that the West Chester Golf and Country Club provides, a key element to the Caswallen neighborhood is its access to fantastic schools. Within just under a 10-minute drive, Caswallen residents can provide a quality education for young minds.
