Holmes is a small community in Ridley Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The community is located in ZIP code 19043.
The small town of Holmes, PA, was named after Richard Holmes. He was a farmer whose family lived in Holmes for nearly 100 years. The family's homestead stood where the local MacDade Mall stands today.
The Macdade Mall opened in 1969 with a mere five retailers. Now a locally renowned landmark, the mall grew into one of only three enclosed shopping complexes in Delaware County.
Throughout the 1980s, 90s, and some early 200s, the mall attracted baseball card collectors and collectible shows. There were even some holiday visits from the "Phanatic," the Philadelphia Phillies' beloved mascot. The retailers’ business was mainly provided by a robust senior citizen base and local youth from the Interboro, Ridley, and Penn Wood school districts.
While the mall hasn’t seen much business over the last twenty years, it is still a local landmark. At its peak, the Macdade mall hosted a 4-screen movie theater, arcade, two dine-in eateries, national chain retailers such as Dollar Tree, Payless Shoes, Fashion Bug, and Hallmark. There were even two successful and reliable medical offices.
In the early 1990s, Interstate 476 opened, crossing the middle of Delaware County. The interstate provided shoppers on the county’s southern edge easy access to more prominent shopping destinations—such shopping destinations, including Springfield and Granite Run Mall, host to several chain stores and restaurants. Due to the competition, MacDade mall steadily lost retailers to low sale customer turnout and sales.
By 2006, the mall opted not to renew the leases of those tenants that had not already fled the premises. Businesses slowly left the mall, some relocating to nearby storefronts.
Today with only one level and one hallway in length, the mall is currently anchored by a Kmart department store and Acme Markets supermarket.
The population of Holmes, PA residents who are college-educated is a bit higher than the average 21.84% of the typical United States community. 27.80% of adult residents in Holmes have at least a bachelor's degree.
As of 2018, the per capita income of Holmes was $37,900USD. This measure equates to an annual income of $151,600USD for a family of four.
The most common language spoken in Holmes, PA, is English. There is also a strong presence of the Polish and Spanish languages.
The crew from the film "The Lovely Bones" noticed the mall’s near-vacant atmosphere and took advantage of the scenery to shoot a scene within its interior. In the scene, the mall is decorated to resemble a 1960s mall. During filming week, thousands of area residents showed up to watch the crew in action and catch a glimpse of stars Mark Wahlberg, Susan Sarandon, and director Peter Jackson.
