The Marcus Hook Community Center provides visitors with the history of the borough in Pennsylvania. The personal injury attorneys in Marcus Hook, PA, have sponsored this article for you to learn more about the small, quaint town.

Located in the southeastern corner of Pennsylvania, Marcus Hook remains a nice little town with friendly residents, tons of things to do, and lots of historical relevance.

Early History

After the Lenni Lenape migration into what is now known as Marcus Hook, the area became very attractive to settlers since it was located on the waterfront of the Delaware River. The town's name originated from a Swedish trade settler, who came and colonized the site in the mid-1600s.

Marcus Hook served as Philadelphia's first port of call during colonial times and competed with Chester in size. In the early 18th century, it briefly became a legendary refuge for pirates, the most prominent cutthroat being Edward Teach, "Blackbeard."

The American Revolution really took a toll on Marcus Hook as there was evidence that a training camp was posted on the grounds on the Marcus Hook Creek for the Pennsylvania military.

In the late 19th century, the completion of the Philadelphia-Wilmington-Baltimore Railroad brought about expanded commercial and residential growth. Stage inns, coastal taverns, warehouses, and related facilities have boosted shipping and fishing revenue.

Over the 350 years of settlement in Marcus Hook, the borough welcomed many types of cultures and religions. It has seen grown to become a very diverse area and continues to improve its economic development as the years progress.

Today, Marcus Hook Borough remains a family-oriented city with close proximity to the downtown business area, public parks and houses, schools, residences, and the waterfront. In Marcus Hook, the small-town charm and a more personalized sense of culture prevail.
