The township is located in the eastern section of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. It covers 1,472 acres that include 2.08% water, such as the Schuylkill River. The Pottstown Municipal Airport is just across the western border. The main roadways include Grosstown Road, West High Street, and Manatawny Street. Nearby communities include Pine Forge, South Pottstown, and Unionville. 


The township was established in 1900, taking land from the Upper Pottsgrove Township. Due to its size and proximity, it relies on Pottstown for public services, such as:

Township Government and Politics

The township is run by a Board of Commissioners that is comprised of five members, which include:

As of 2000, there were 3,815 residents in the township. They formed 1,524 households and 1,010 families within the 1,606 housing units. By 2010 the population increased by 1.5% with 3,874, and the racial composition included the following:

  • 83.7% White
  • 9.5% Black or African American
  • 0.3% Native American
  • 0.6% Asian
  • 2.9% were two or more races
  • 3.3%  Hispanic or Latino

The median income was $42,759, and a family income averaged $52,177. Men had an income of $32,912 versus $28,949 for women. The township's per capita income was $18,413. Approximately 5.8% of families and 7.7% of the entire population lived below the poverty line, including 8.7% under age 18.
