Philadelphia has always had a thriving arts scene, and this scene has led to the creation of many programs and spaces designed to help create a new generation of artists in the city's communities. our Kensington personal injury lawyers think these spaces have incredibly positive effects on our communities. The Portside Arts Center is one of our favorite spaces in the Kensington area. This facility opened in January 2008 after Kim Creighton enlisted the help of friends and community volunteers to renovate a 6,000 square-foot warehouse. Today, that warehouse is home to four visual arts classrooms and an art gallery. Here are some of the programs and events hosted by the Portside Arts Center:
Portside Arts Center runs programs that cater to participants of all ages.
The center currently offers four creative workshops and classes under the adults category:
Portside offers several programs just for kids, both during the school year and the summer:
These workshops help local teens build portfolios which can be used for school or personal use. Each of the five workshops focuses on a different portfolio requirement needed for applications to Creative and Performing Arts High School and Benjamin Rush High School. This program helps students become better artists and better understand themselves and their identities through art.
Workshop dates for 2019 are as follows:
Artists of all skill levels are welcome in these workshops. Students will learn self-portrait drawing, still life drawing, painting, sculpture, and digital photography.
This project helps bring art directly into classrooms in the River Wards. The stated mission of ArtsMobile "is to deliver visual arts integration to local schools during the day, in the classroom, at no cost to the school." The program seeks to improve student learning through interaction with the arts, along with educating teachers about the value of arts integration.
Portside Arts Center organizes three major annual community events:
The Lehigh Ave Arts Fest is the main event on the Portside calendar and the largest annual fundraiser, supporting Portside's Young Artists Scholarship Fund. This scholarship fund helps kids and teens in Philadelphia to nurture their creative sides in visual arts programs year-round.
Some highlights from 2018's LAAF included:
The Philly Puff is an annual inflatable sculpture contest that takes place alongside the Lehigh Ave Arts Fest. This always makes for a fun time, whether you're a spectator or debuting your own inflatable work of art.
Every year, Portside hosts a community Halloween party with family-friendly fun activities like dancing, games, raffles, a costume contest, pumpkin painting, and other fun Halloween pasttimes.
