If you're big into comic books, superheroes, video games, or any other aspect of geek culture, we highly recommend a visit to Amalgam Comics & Coffeehouse in Kensington. This shop has a great selection of merchandise and regularly hosts public events where community members can come together and bond over a mutual appreciation for different comics, games, books, and more. Our Kensington personal injury lawyers think this is one of the most positive businesses in the community.
Amalgam Comics and Coffeehouse combines classic comics, video games, action figures, and other pieces of geek culture with delicious coffee in the heart of Kensington. Owner Ariell Johnson first thought of Amalgam in 2003 while she was still a student at Temple University. In December 2015, the comic and coffeehouse opened its doors to the public. Since then, the business has gotten attention in national media for their commitment to inclusion and the fact that this is the first black woman-owned comic book store on the East Coast.
While the huge comic book collection certainly is impressive, that's not all that this comic/coffee hybrid shop has to offer. You can find a huge range of interesting reading materials, toys, video games, and more:
And of course, we highly recommend enjoying a tasty coffee or espresso and baked good during your shopping trip to Amalgam. Their featured blend is Philly Fair Trade Roasters.
Amalgam regularly hosts a variety of fun events where geeks can get together and bond over their common interests. Here are some of the regular events you have to choose from:
This 21+ event is held every First Friday at 8:30 p.m. There's a $5 cover and it is a BYOB open-mic event. Come to enjoy some stand-up comedy, music, or whatever other show the performers of the night decide to put on for the crowd.
Each month, Amalgam chooses a book for their book club meetings, held on the first Wednesday of the month. We think this is a great way to make new friends with common interests, as you enjoy some delicious coffee while offering your interpretations of the reading.
No shop dedicated to nerd culture would be complete without a regular Dungeons and Dragons meetup. Held every Sunday, Amalgam's meetups are free and open to players of all skill levels.
This book club is specifically catered to girls from ages 6-14 who love comic books and superheroes. Held every first Saturday with a $5 registration fee.
