St. Lawrence is a borough within Berks County, Pennsylvania. Located at the geographical coordinates of 40.325814 degrees north latitude and 75.867418 degrees west longitude, it is bordered by Exeter Township to the north, east, and south, Jacksonwald to the east, Reiffton to the south, the borough of Mount Penn to the west, and Pennside to the northwest. As of the 2010 census, the borough has a population of 1,809 people and a total area of 0.9 square miles.
St. Lawrence was incorporated in 1927 and named for William Brumbach's St. Lawrence Woolen Mill that once operated in the town. Before then, the area was known as Esterly after Frank Esterly, the former keeper of the Black Bear Hotel.
John F. Lutz Furniture Co. & Funerary is a complex consisting of a combination of house and shop, warehouse and showroom, and a carriage house. In 1878, a two-story, brick and frame combination house and shop was built of the Italiante architectural style. In 1885 and 1910, two small two-story additions were added to it. The two-story, Italianate-style, brick carriage house was built between then in 1896. In 1900, the four-story John F. Lutz Furniture warehouse and showroom building was constructed. It is also of the Italiante style. In 1928 and 1955, a four-story brick addition and a two-story concrete block addition was added to it, respectively.
As a furniture maker, John F. Lutz also ventured into coffin building; thus, beginning his funerary business. The John F. Lutz Furniture Co. & Funerary remained in business until 1968. From then to 1990, the warehouse and showroom was home to a furniture outlet. On February 16, 1996, the historic building complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
Antietam Valley Shopping Center is a shopping mall on St. Lawrence Avenue. As the only shopping plaza in the borough, it includes a number of stores and businesses that offer regular goods and services for residents in the surrounding area. Some of which are:
