Brookhaven is a borough in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, that hosts 8,500 residents and is home to approximately 150 businesses. The area is known as ‘A Community with Unity’ and is a great place to live or visit if you are looking to meet friendly people with neighborly values.
Brookhaven, Pennsylvania, originally belonged as part of a land grant given to William Penn in 1681 by King Charles II of England. The landowner negotiated with the Lenni-Lenape Indians, the original incumbents of the land, and the land was divided into municipal districts.
The area was included in the Municipal District of Chester Township. Thomas Coebourn, who settled in 1682, owned 317 acres, and Richard Few was granted 227 acres. By 1682, Thomas Brassey was granted 385 acres in the township.
Eventually, the original grants were divided into smaller pieces of land and sold to subsequent settlers, such as Trimble, Edwards, and Shepherd. Today, you will find the perseverance of the borough’s history in many of the street names which are named after these settlers.
For nearly 250 years, the region was dependent on the farming and dairy economy and two immensely successful mill businesses across Chester and Ridley Creek.
In the mid 19th century, Brookhaven developed into a town of small crossroads. Hinkson's Corners, now Brookhaven Road, was established before 1816 as a service road to the mills on Ridley. The byways eventually became significant highways and at the crossroads of the two routes grew a collection of professional offices and summer homes.
In 1872, the name "Brookhaven" was published on the letterhead of the Beatty Brothers General Store at Sneath's Corners. Following the headline, the name was commonly used and remains today.
At the latter end of the 19th century, various large stock farms were thriving. By the 1900s, most farms were consolidated under the ownership of John Price Crozer, who bred racehorses and prize bulls. Following Crozer's death, the farms were sold to developers.
During the Brookhaven Borough's incorporation on April 4, 1945, the area hosted 672 residents.
Over the last 50 years, Brookhaven has developed from a dairy and stock farm economy to a residential community with approximately 3,486 households.
The borough is served by a dedicated team of public officials, including the mayor Denise Leslie. Brookhaven is now home to growing families and continues to provide an appeasing lifestyle for its residents.
