Ardmore Park

The community of Admore Park is located on the southern edge of Admore in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Neighboring communities include Haverford, Havertown, Penn Wynne, Wynnewood, and Hamilton Court. Roadways West Wynnewood Road, East Eagle Road, and Haverford Road meet at the center of the neighborhood. Cobbs Creek flows along the western border.

History

Located on the western side of Philadelphia, the community helps form one of the city's suburbs. Initially, the greater area was knowns as Athensville, but along with its railroad station, it was renamed in 1873 by the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Autocar Company relocated its headquarters within the town in 1899. It built a factory on the edge of downtown, but it shut down in 1954. During demolition in 1956, a fire broke out that almost took out the downtown area. The greater area consistently ranks among the most desirable suburbs of Philadelphia. Its train station is served by SEPTA Regional Rail's Paoli and Thorndale Line and Amtrak passenger trains. Residents and guests can enjoy several recreation areas throughout the area, including Linwood Park. Suburban Square is one of the oldest shopping centers in the country, opening in 1928, and is located adjacent to the train station.

The country's first major department store, Strawbridge & Clothier, opened in 1930. Other places of interest include:

  • the former Suburban movie theater, which is now Not Your Average Joe's Restaurant
  • Ardmore Farmer's Market
  • an Apple Store, and many mall shops

Historical Landmarks

Just north of the community is the Merion Golf Club East Course. The private golf course has two 18 hole championship layouts and was first opened in 1912. It was designed by Hugh Wilson based on a Colonial Revival architectural style and has been the host of more USGA Championships than any other golf course in the country. It was added to the NRHP in 1989.

Neighborhood

The community is home to The Head Nut. The boutique gift shop can be dated back to Temp Tee Nuts, founded in 1945. The shop sells much more than nuts and roasts its own coffee beans. It offers over 80 flavors and brews to appeal to any coffee lover. Most of the items are sold in bulk to allow the customer to save money. Just some of the items found within the shop include:

  • teas from around the world
  • more gummy candies than imaginable
  • spices galore
  • nuts of all kinds
  • monthly specials, such as hot chocolate bombs during winter

Demographics

The greater area had 12,616 residents that formed the 5,529 households and 3,129 families within its borders in 2000. The following is a breakdown of the diversity found within the townspeople:

  • 76.8% White
  • 12.9% Black or African American
  • 0.1% Native American
  • 4.1% Asian
  • 0.1% Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander
  • 1.2% other races
  • 2.3% two or more races
  • 4.0% Hispanic or Latino ancestry

The greater area had an income median of $60,966, and the income for a family was $75,828. Men averaged an annual income of $46,920 while women averaged $40,802. Some of the occupations held by the working residents in the neighborhood included: 

  • 63.6% executive, management, and professional occupations
  • 17.6% sales and service jobs
  • 12.1% clerical, assistant, and tech support occupations
  • 6.7% manufacturing and laborer occupations
