Early History

The town was named after the Lenape term that translates place with a meadow. The first European settlers included the Finns and the Swedes. Farms and orchards began to flourish in the area, causing it to become the state's hub for nurseries and florist gardens.

Historical Landmarks

Bartram's Garden is the oldest botanical garden located in the United States. It sits on a property of 50-acre and was established in 1728 by John Bartram. Bartram was an Anglo-American colonial botanist born into a Quaker family. Despite his lack of proper education, he had many interests that included medicine and medicinal plants. He made a successful business out of his hobby by connecting with other botanists.

The property of the garden was once territory belonging to the Lenape Native Americans and sits on the Schuylkill River. Rambo's Rock, another attraction that unfortunately disappeared years ago, once sat on the property. Many pictures depict this old relic before it vanished.

In 1976 the existing Grays Ferry Bridge was constructed and still contains a four-lane highway, but the original structure dated back to 1902. Prior to bridges, three ferries allowed access across the river; they included:

  • Upper Ferry, or Sculls Ferry
  • Middle Ferry
  • Lower Ferry

The historic elementary school, S. Weir Mitchell Elementary School, is located on Kingsessing Avenue. Construction began in 1915, and Henry DeCoursey Richards designed it in a Late Gothic Revival style.
