The borough of Ridley Park is located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The community holds a rich history and is currently home to The Boeing Company's CH-47 Chinook helicopter division.
Isaac Hinckley founded Ridley Park in 1871. Hinckley was the president of the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad. He wanted to expand the company's rail line to gain more business.
At the time, malaria was a significant health concern, and urbanites sought relief from city life due to the threat of potential spread. The city dwellers quickly purchased all the new homes being built in Ridley Park. Seeing all the real estate success, Hinckley traveled further south on Chester Pike to the area now known as Ridley Park.
To avoid potential conflicts, Hinckley formed an association to acquire the land in May 1871. Hinckley hired Robert Morris Copeland, a noted Boston landscape architect, to develop a master plan for a suburban park community. The community, known as the Borough of Ridley Park. Copeland's design is Delaware County's first planned community.
The remarkably stunning landscaped streets and parks made Ridley Park popular between the late 19th century and early part of the 20th century. Ridley Park gained a reputation as a summer resort for wealthy Philadelphians. The Victorian-style homes of the area still exist and are still lived in today.
Ridley Park was once home to John Morton, signer of the American Declaration of Independence. He was born and raised in a log cabin adjacent to East Ridley Avenue. Morton later replaced the cabin with a brick house and began farming 133 acres (0.54 km2) in the Ridley Park area.
Ridley Park is served by the extensive, suburban Ridley School District. The district encompasses approximately 8 square miles and has one high school, one middle school, and seven elementary schools.
According to 2000 federal census data, the district served a resident population of 40,429. The district also employed 443 teachers, 430 full-time and part-time support personnel, and 28 administrators.
The well-funded district received more than $18.8 million in state funding in 2007–2008. With great town pride, Ridley Park schools at all levels use the Green Raiders as their mascot. Initially, the Raiders referred to Native Americans from the Lenni Lenape Nation, but the district has since ceased using most material relating to the tribe.
The beautiful borough of Ridley Park hosts some of the most stunning Victorian homes in Pennsylvania. The area offers beautifully landscaped streets, breathtaking parks, and comfortable livability. Therefore, it is no surprise that the borough has a healthy real estate market. The median home value in Ridley Park is $202,000USD, with 71% of residents being homeowners.
