Sacred Heart

The neighborhood is located within the city of Allentown in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. Jordan Creek flows along the western edge of the neighborhood. West Gordon Street forms the northern border, North 5th Street the eastern, and Linden Street forms the southern border. Some towns that share a border include Jordan Heights, Franklin Park, and 1st Ward. 

History

The town is home to the Sacred Heart Hospital, which the Sacred Heart Parish first established in 1912 to battle an outbreak of diphtheria. The Missionary Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart came to the area from Germany. The actual hospital that served the community was not officially formed until 1915, and two years later, it was incorporated. Some highlights of the hospital's history include:

  • 1972: begins educating family physicians in its family medicine residency program.
  • 2004: The first Lehigh Valley weight-loss surgery is performed.
  • 2008: The Comprehensive Wound Healing Center opens, offering treatments and therapies to help speed the healing process.
  • 2010: The Extended Acute Care opens, this $1.8 million project provides consumers with lon­g-term care in a specially designed environment.
  • 2011: The area's first anterior hip surgery is performed.
  • 2015: They unveil a $1.8 million fifth-floor renovation with 18 new private rooms. These new rooms come with a private bathroom and a pull-out couch to accommodate family members who want to stay overnight.
  • 2017: Sacred Heart HealthCare System and St. Luke's University Health Network merge.

Neighborhood

Approximately 67.1% of the homes in the neighborhood were built before 1939, giving the town a historic charm. The average home price is $127,287, while rent averages $1,429. The town has many small to medium apartments and townhouses, with a low vacancy rate of 16.2%.

Education

The town has a lower rate of college graduates than 97.4% of other American neighborhoods. Only 4.6% of the adult residents have earned a bachelor's degree. 

Children in the area can attend the many public schools offered by the Allentown City School District. These include:

  • Lincoln Early Child Center - grade K - 173 students - located on Walnut Street
  • Central Elementary School - grades K-5 - 727 students - located on West Turner Street
  • Harrison-Morton Middle School - grade 6-8 - 838 students - located on North 2nd Street
  • William Allen High School - grade 9-12 - 2,605 students - located on North 17th Street

Private education options include:

  • Central Catholic High School - located on North 4th Street
  • Grace Montessori School - located on West Linden Street
  • Divine Learning Center Academy - located on North 9th Street

Demographics

The neighborhood is more densely populated than 95.4% of other neighborhoods in the United States and has approximately 21,393 people per square mile living within its borders. Most of the households are low-income, and it has a lower income average than 91.1% of other neighborhoods in the country. Some of the working residents are employed in fields such as:

  • 38.2% manufacturing and laborer occupations
  • 33.6% sales and service jobs
  • 22.5% clerical, assistant, and tech support roles
  • 5.1% executive, management, and professional occupations

Spanish is spoken by 54.3% of households. Other languages spoken by the townspeople include English and Italian. As many as 16% of the townspeople were born outside of the country. Many of the commonly found ethnicities and ancestries include:
