Strawberry Mansion is a neighborhood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The neighborhood is often associated with the historic Strawberry Mansion and hosts an approximate population of 22,562. Strawberry Mansion belongs to ZIP code 19121 and area codes 215, 267, and 445.

Historic Timeline

The town of Strawberry Mansion has seen great change over the years. In the 1880s, Strawberry Mansion was considered a wealthy area, and the average home price was 85% higher than all other houses in Philadelphia.

The neighborhood continued to flourish for many years until the 1950s and 1960s, when the town experienced financial decay. By 2000, the town, which was one of the most expensive places to live in Philadelphia, suddenly had the lowest average home price in the city.

With the dropping in real estate value combined with police neglect, Strawberry Mansion gained a reputation as one of the most dangerous places to live in Philadelphia. Especially because the neighboring towns, Brewerytown and Fairmount Park, continued to develop and rise in property value, Strawberry Mansion paled in comparison.

Since 2000, many buildings in the town have been completely restored, but crime continued within the neighborhood.

In 2015, the town granted public access to the perimeter of a fallow basin of the East Park Reservoir to expand youth programs in the hope of reducing local crime. The area is now considered Philadelphia's melting pot and reflects a wave of redevelopment.

The Historic Strawberry Mansion

Before Strawberry Mansion was granted its name, the area was known as Sommerville for many years. Around the 1860s, the area was named after the Historic Strawberry Mansion.

The mansion was built from 1783 to 1789 by Judge William Lewis, a United States Attorney for the District of Pennsylvania. Lewis originally named the mansion Summerville, which corresponded with the town's name at the time.

However, from 1846 to 1867, the mansion became well known when the farmers on the estate began to serve strawberries and cream to the public. The dessert became so popular that the mansion took on the name "Strawberry Mansion," and the town followed suit.

Between 1927 and 1931, the mansion was restored by a nonprofit organization called The Committee of 1926. From that point on, the mansion would be used as a historic house museum and place of hospitality.

If you want to learn more about the historic Strawberry Mansion, the estate is open to the public from February–December and offers tours from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Strawberry Mansion High School

The town is home to the Strawberry Mansion High School under the School District of Philadelphia. The high school opened in 1977 and hosts a student population of 277.

The high school was considered rather controversial for several years as The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency consistently labeled the high school as one of the state's most dangerous schools until 2013.

Despite the high school's reputation, it has had several notable alumni including,

  • Meek Mill, Rapper
  • Jazmine Sullivan, Singer-Songwriter
  • Ronald "Flip" Murray, NBA player
  • Dwayne Davis, Basketball player
  • D. J. Newbill, Basketball player
