Unionville

The unincorporated community is located in East Marlborough Township within the southern region of Chester County, Pennsylvania. The town has an elevation of 249 feet or 137 meters. Some of the towns that share a border include Willowdale, Embreeville, Woodville, and Pocopson. The Kennett Oxford Bypass travels along the southern edge of the community. 

History

The town was initially called Jacksonville, after its founder John Jackson. Jackson first built a log cabin in the northeast corner of Doe Run Road and Wollaston Road. He later replaced this with a large brick house which he built in 1751. This house was located on the southeastern corner of these roads. His home became the Cross Key Inn, which provided travelers with food and lodging between 1808 and 1833.

In 1834, the Union Hotel replaced the inn. This hotel was built by Isaac Smith across the street. The new inn provided a barn for travelers' horses and cattle, which were often brought to be sold or traded. 

Historical Landmarks

The historic district is located near the crossing of Wollaston Road and West Doe Run Road. It consists of 69 contributing buildings throughout the area of the village. Include are many resident homes made of brick, stone, and frame. The oldest building is dated to have been built around 1750. Some of these buildings included:

  • Unionville Academy (1834)
  • a country store (c. 1875)
  • Union Hotel (1834)
  • Cross Keys Inn (1751)
  • Unionville Saddle Shop (1887)
  • Unionville Hall (1849–50)
  • Grange Hall (1845; originally the Friends Meetinghouse)
  • Green Lawn Seminary

Neighborhood

Also, within the historic district area are many shops and restaurants. Some of these include:

The neighborhood has many highly rated public schools that the children can attend that are part of the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District. To name a few:

  • Unionville Elementary School - rated 9/10 - located on West Doe Run Road
  • Charles F Patton Middle School - rated 7/10 - located on Unionville Road
  • Unionville High School - rated 10/10 - located on Unionville Road

Demographics

In 2016, the community had a population of 205 residents. As many as 11.1% of the residents were foreign-born. A few of the ancestries found with the households included:
