West Spring Mills

The neighborhood of West Spring Mills is situated in the northeastern section of Gladwyne in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. It helps to form the greater area of the Lower Merion Township, along with Haverford, Merion, Overbrook Hills, Pencoyd, and Ardmore. The Schuylkill Expressway travels along the north and eastern borders along with the Schuylkill River. The Sawmill Run flows through the community as it dumps into the river.

History

The first European settlers in the greater area were the Welsh Quakers, who were granted a tract of land in 1682 from William Penn. By 1713, the area had as many as 52 landowners. 

The baseball field at Gladwyne Park was named in honor of Richie Ashburn, an MLB Hall of Famer. The Richie Ashburn Field, located on Youngs Ford Road, offers the residents a 60-foot baseball diamond in addition to the playground equipment. 

Neighborhood

The neighborhood is home to the Philadelphia Country Club, located off of Spring Mill Road. The course was founded in 1890 and, as early as 1899, played a significant part in women's golf.

  • Ruth Underhill came in 5th during the US Women's Amateur Championship against Margaret Fox.
  • By 1932, the US Women's Amateur Championship was won six times by Glenna Collett Vare.
  • The first United States Golf Association Girls' Junior Championship was held at the course in 1949.
  • The course set the backdrop for the announcement from Grace Kelly and Prince Rainer, III of Monaco of their engagement in 1956. 

Education

The schools within the area are part of the Lower Merion School District, including:

  • Gladwyne Elementary School - located on Righters Mill Road
  • Welsh Valley Middle School - located on Tower Lane
  • Harriton Senior High School - located on North Ithan Avenue

Children are encouraged to get out and learn about nature at the 30-acre Riverbend Environmental Education Center, located on Spring Mill Road. As many as 35,000 guests visit the facility each year. The facility offers its members and visitors the following education programs:
