The Kensington area has been undergoing something of a rebirth over the past several years, with all kinds of interesting new businesses opening up in the neighborhood. One of our favorite recent additions is Urban Axes, which is a nationwide chain that chose to make their Philadelphia location in Kensington. It's what it sounds like - you have the chance to throw axes at targets in the middle of the city.
This makes for a great group activity when you and your friends are looking for a fun night out. It's also a great choice for a team-building exercise at work or a fun and unusual date night.
Axe throwing is an indoor sport that first gained popularity in Canada. It's been growing in popularity there for the past decade and has recently started to become popular south of the border, here in the United States.
The game is similar to darts. You throw hatches at wooden targets that have bullseyes. Like darts, you get points based on where your axe lands on the board.
Urban Axes offers three different ways to participate in the axe-throwing action:
Urban Axes offers special group events for groups of 6 to 24 people. These events last for 2.5 hours. In our opinion, this is the most fun way to experience Urban Axes. This is what you want if you're looking to host a birthday party, team-building exercise, bachelor/bachelorette party, reunion, or a fun night out on the town with a group of friends. These are organized in a tournament format and include safety and instruction from an expert staff member before the start of the tournament. Group events must be booked in advance.
If you're really looking to build your skills as an axe thrower, consider signing up for an 8-week league. This is a great way to meet new people if you're new to the city. There is no need to find a team to compete with - you'll build bonds with other participants as you compete over the course of the season.
If you're just a little curious about axe-throwing but not quite ready to commit to a full group outing, you can check out Urban Axe during their walk-in hours. They offer set times where you can participate in an hour-long walk-in session. Staff will give you pointers and help you improve your game.
