Every spring, the Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby and Arts Festival comes to the Kensington neighborhood. This day-long celebration features a race of human-powered floats, along with a street festival full of more than 100 local artists and vendors selling and displaying their arts and crafts. Of course, there are plenty of food and beverage trucks around too, where you can enjoy some tasty food and a cold drink. Our Kensington personal injury lawyers think this is one of Philadelphia's most interesting festivals and we try to make it here each year to watch the derby and enjoy the spirit of the street festival. Here are some of our favorite aspects of the Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby and Arts Festival.
The Kinetic Sculpture Derby is the highlight of this event, as dozens of mobile human-powered sculptures compete in a race to finish a three-mile urban obstacle course running throughout Kensington and Fishtown. At the conclusion, the sculptures slide into a mud pit.
All of the following features and methods are banned in this derby:
Participants are required to come up with human-generated methods to keep their vehicles moving at a pace of at least three miles per hour. At the end of the race, the judges will hand out over a dozen awards, such as the People's Choice Award, Award for Best/Worst Pun, Award for Best Costuming, Award for Best 10+ Person Team, and more.
The Kinetic Sculpture Derby and Arts Festival has plenty of food truck options, and there is surely something to appease people of all tastes and dietary preferences here. Food trucks from the 2018 festival included:
If you're looking to pick up some unique arts and crafts to decorate your home or as a gift for a friend or loved one, you'll have plenty to choose from at the KSDAF. Here are some of the vendors that participated in the 2018 festival:
