All About Woodlyn, PA

The car accident attorneys in Woodlyn, PA, at Justice Guardians kindly sponsor the following article on the area's history.

The Woodlyn Area

Woodlyn, Pennsylvania, is located in the northeast of Folsom and is 14 miles from Philadelphia. This CDP, a census-designated place, is part of the Riley Township and takes up 1,088 acres. Two areas of interest located in the Woodlyn area are the historical Crum Creek and the Notre Dame De Lourdes School.

Crum Creek

At the southernmost point of Woodlyn is Crum Creek. The creek was named by the first European settlers, the Dutch, meaning crooked creek. The creek flows 24 miles beginning in the swamps of Newtown Square before draining into the Delaware River at Eddystone, PA. The swamps of Newtown initially were a lake. However, they were dammed due to the mills that populated the area in the 19th century.

In 1931 a dam was built on Crum Creek, in the southern part of Woodlyn on Route 252, to form the 391 acres Springton Lake. This lake is maintained as a drinking water reservoir by Aqua America. The water treatment plant provides over 19 million gallons of water to the neighboring residents and businesses every day. Altogether, the creek has five dams, including the following locations:

  • Upper Providence Township
  • Nether Providence Township
  • north of Wallingford Road
  • under the SEPTA Media/Elwyn bridge
  • north of East Rose Valley Road

Due to the large areas that are next to the creek, many different species of wildlife call it their home, including the following:

  • salamanders
  • frogs
  • turtles
  • fish, namely bass and perch
