History of Zebley's Corner, PA

The worker’s comp attorneys in Zebley's Corner, PA at Justice Guardians, have sponsored the following history on the founding family.

History of Zebleys Corner

Zebley's Corner, Pennsylvania, is located in Delaware County with Bethel Township. Not far from the Delaware border, the neighborhood is at the intersection of Zebley Road and Pennsylvania Route 261.

The Zebley Families

The name Zebleys Corner was given to the intersection at Zebley Road and Foulk Road to honor the many Zebley families that resided in the area. Most were immigrants from South Germany. The Pennsylvania area of Zebley's Corner was home to as many as eight families from the Zebley bloodline. One of these families included Frank R. Zebley, author of "Along the Brandywine" and "The Churches of Delaware." Frank, born to Kate Price Zebley, spent over twelve years documenting the churches and former churches in the area that includes Zebley's Corner. He would publish his historical account in 1947.

Chester-Bethel Methodist Church

Under the preaching of Captain Thomas Webb in 1765, many of the residents near Zebley's Corner converted to the Methodist faith. To accommodate them, a church was erected on Cloud Farm owned by Robert Cloud and Magdalene, called Cloud's Chapel. They sold the one-acre church lot in 1797 to a group of trustees under the terms they would develop for church purposes. A disagreement between the trustees would occur in 1847, causing a split in the group. One congregation would then build the Siloam Methodist Church in 1852, which still stands today as a private residence.

Another church Zebley recorded, Bethel Church, still of Methodist faith, stood near Zebley's Corner in 1780. He described how the other denominations mistreated the Methodist practitioners. These other denominations that stood in opposition to the Methodists churches included the following:

  • 1848 - the German Lutherans
  • 1858 - the Swedenborgians
  • 1867 - the Unitarians
  • 1880 - the Hebrew Congregations
  • 1892 - the Seventh Day Adventists
  • 1897 - the Christian and Missionary Alliance
  • 1902 - the Christian Scientists
  • 1906 - the Russian Greek Catholic Church
  • 1918 - the Pentecostal Church
  • 1936 - the First Independent Church
  • 1939 - the Nazarenes
  • 1939 - the Orthodox Church
